A Cenozoic-style scenario for the end-Ordovician glaciation
The end-Ordovician was an enigmatic interval in the Phanerozoic, known for massive glaciation potentially at elevated CO2 levels, biogeochemical cycle disruptions recorded as large isotope anomalies and a devastating extinction event. Ice-sheet volumes claimed to be twice those of the Last Glacial Maximum paradoxically coincided with oceans as warm as today. Here we argue that some of these remarkable claims arise from undersampling of incomplete geological sections that led to apparent temporal correlations within the relatively coarse resolution capability of Palaeozoic biochronostratigraphy. We examine exceptionally complete sedimentary records from two, low and high, palaeolatitude settings. Their correlation framework reveals a Cenozoic-style scenario including three main glacial cycles and higher-order phenomena. This necessitates revision of mechanisms for the end-Ordovician events, as the first extinction is tied to an early phase of melting, not to initial cooling, and the largest δ13C excursion occurs during final deglaciation, not at the glacial apex

Impact des filets imprégnés de deltaméthrine sur les populations de glossines au Parc zoologique d'Abidjan et à l'Université Nangui Abrogoua.
Des enquêtes entomologiques antérieures réalisées à Abidjan dans le Parc National du Banco et les reliques forestières du Parc zoologique (Zoo) d'Abidjan et de l'Université Nangui Abrogoua (UNA), ont montré la présence de Glossina palpalis palpalis, vecteur majeur des trypanosomoses humaine et animale en Côte d'Ivoire. Face au risque encouru par les populations humaines et animales de cette ville, une lute antivectorielle basée sur une nouvelle technique, les filets imprégnés de deltaméthrine a été mise en place au Zoo. L'Université Nangui Abrogoua a servi de site témoin. L'objectif a été d'évaluer l'impact de ces filets dans le cadre d'une lutte antivectorielle au Zoo d'Abidjan. Avant la pose des filets en février 2011, des captures de glossines ont été effectuées de novembre 2010 à janvier 2011 avec 12 pièges "Vavoua" posés Durant quatre jours consécutifs sur les différents sites. Les évaluations ont débuté après la crise post-électorale, en septembre 2011. Le site témoin a été perturbé par les travaux de réaménagement, qui ont détruit une partie de l'habitat des glossines. Au Zoo, la DAP a chuté brusquement de 1,8 à 0 glossine/ piège/jour. A l'Université, la densité a baissé progressivement, de 0,4 à 0,2 glossine/ piège/ jour, avant de s'annuler. L'utilisation des filets imprégnés de deltaméthrine a été très efficace, cet outil pourrait constituer une option supplémentaire dans la lutte contre les trypanosomoses.Mots clés: lutte anti-vectorielle, Filets, Parc zoologique, l'Université Nangui Abrogoua. Impact of nets impregnated with deltamethrin on tsetse populations in Abidjan Zoological Park and the Nangui Abrogouab University. Using nets impregnated with deltamethrin against tsetsePrevious entomological surveys carried out in Abidjan in the Banco National Park and forest relics of Abidjan zoological Park and the Nangui Abrogoua University showed the presence of Glossina palpalis palpalis, main vector of human and animal trypanosomiasis in Ivory Coast. Cope with the risk to human and animal populations of this city, vector control based on a new technique that is nets impregnated with deltamethrin have been set up at the Zoo. The University Nangui Abrogoua served as a control site. The objective was to evaluate the impact of deltamethrin impregnated nets in vector control of Abidjan Zoo. Before the introduction of insecticide-treated nets in February 2011, the flies catches were conducted from November 2010 to January 2011 with 12 "Vavoua" traps laid during four consecutive days in different sites. Assessments began after the post-election crisis in September 2011. The control site was disrupted by the redevelopment, which destroyed part of the tsetse habitat. At The Zoo, the DAP fell sharply from 1.8 to 0 of tsetse / trap / day. The DAP has dropped sharply from 1.8 to 0 of tsetse / trap / day. At the University, the density decreased gradually from 0.4 to 0.2 tsetse / trap / day, before cancel. The use of nets treated with deltamethrin has been very effective, this tool could be an additional option in the fight against trypanosomiasis.Keywords: nets, zoological park, Nangui Abrogoua University, vector control
Selective interlayer ferromagnetic coupling between the Cu spins in YBa Cu O grown on top of La Ca MnO
Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus
mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk
properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray
scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between
the in-plane Cu spins in YBa Cu O (YBCO) superconductor when it
is grown on top of ferromagnetic La Ca MnO (LCMO) manganite
layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of
YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed
in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La Ca interfacial
termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct
energetic of CuO chain and CuO plane at the La Ca and
MnO terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer
of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings
suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial
engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized
Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the

Water Walls for Life Support
A method and associated system for processing waste gases, liquids and solids, produced by human activity, to separate (i) liquids suitable for processing to produce potable water, (ii) solids and liquids suitable for construction of walls suitable for enclosing a habitat volume and for radiation shielding, and (iii) other fluids and solids that are not suitable for processing. A forward osmosis process and a reverse osmosis process are sequentially combined to reduce fouling and to permit accumulation of different processable substances. Collateral and Debt Maturity Choice. A Signaling Model
This paper derives optimal loan policies under asymmetric information where banks offer loan contracts of long and short duration, backed or unbacked with collateral. The main novelty of the paper is that it analyzes a setting in which high quality firms use collateral as a complementary device along with debt maturity to signal their superiority. The least-cost signaling equilibrium depends on the relative costs of the signaling devices, the difference in firm quality and the proportion of good firms in the market. Model simulations suggest a non-monotonic relationship between firm quality and debt maturity, in which high quality firms have both long-term secured debt and short-term secured or non-secured debt.
On DLA's η
In his pioneering 1961 paper on seismic anisotropy in a layered earth, Don L. Anderson (hereafter referred to as DLA) introduced a parameter often referred to in global seismology as η without providing any reasoning. This note hopes to clarify the significance of η in the context of the dependence of body wave velocities in a transversely isotropic system on the angle of incidence, and also its relation with the other well-known anisotropic parameters introduced by Leon Thomsen in 1986
The High Voltage Feedthroughs for the ATLAS Liquid Argon Calorimeters
The purpose, design specifications, construction techniques, and testing
methods are described for the high voltage feedthrough ports and filters of the
ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeters. These feedthroughs carry about 5000 high
voltage wires from a room-temperature environment (300 K) through the cryostat
walls to the calorimeters cells (89 K) while maintaining the electrical and
cryogenic integrity of the system. The feedthrough wiring and filters operate
at a maximum high voltage of 2.5 kV without danger of degradation by corona
discharges or radiation at the Large Hadron Collider
